For Growers

The Grain Sustainability Framework supports growers by demonstrating industry sustainability performance using credible evidence. By tracking national trends across environmental, social and economic indicators, the GSF helps protect market access, strengthen social licence, and inform better decisions for the future of Australian grain production.

What the GSF Means for Growers

The Grain Sustainability Framework works on behalf of Australian grain growers to demonstrate, with credible data, how our industry performs and improves over time.

It defines what sustainable grain production means in the Australian context. It uses credible, independently sourced data to measure, monitor and report performance across environmental, social and economic indicators. And it tracks trends over time to show progress and identify areas for improvement

The GSF measures and reports at a national level. It does not collect farm-level data from individual growers.

Why does this matter?

Markets, regulators, customers and investors increasingly expect evidence. The GSF helps the industry meet disclosure expectations, maintain and grow market access, strengthen social licence and improve access to capital

Just as importantly, it provides a practical industry-wide view of risks, opportunities and performance trends that can inform better decisions across the sector.

The GSF is transparent in reporting, grounded in evidence and impartial in nature

The GSF is

  • A national reporting framework that measures and communicates industry performance over time.
  • A tool that helps demonstrate the strength and credibility of Australian grain production.
  • An industry-led initiative governed independently and structured to avoid political or corporate influence

The GSF does not

  • Set farming rules.
  • Certify or endorse individual businesses.
  • Prescribe how you farm.
  • Collect data from individual growers.
  • Take policy or political positions

The GSF exists to report performance, not to regulate it.

FAQs

Does the GSF require me to provide data from my farm?

No. The GSF reports using national-level datasets sourced from organisations such as ABARES, ABS, GRDC, CSIRO and others. It does not collect individual farm data and does not require growers to submit information.

Will the GSF change how I farm?

No. The GSF does not prescribe farming practices or business decisions. It reports on industry performance. Decisions about farm management remain with individual growers.

Is this another certification scheme?

No. The GSF is not a certification program. It does not audit, accredit or endorse individual farms or businesses. It is a national sustainability reporting framework

How does the GSF benefit growers?

It helps protect and grow market access by demonstrating credible sustainability performance at a national level. It supports industry advocacy with evidence. It strengthens the industry’s ability to respond to disclosure requirements from customers, investors and regulators

It also highlights opportunities and risks that can inform investment, research and innovation priorities.

Who governs the GSF?

The GSF is jointly established by GrainGrowers and Grain Producers Australia. It is overseen by an independent Chair and a Council responsible for governance and approval of reporting. A skills-based Steering Group leads design and development.

The structure is deliberately designed to prevent political or corporate influence from distorting decisions.

Will the GSF expand beyond on-farm reporting?

The current boundary focuses primarily on on-farm sustainability outcomes. The phased approach ensures strong foundations before broader whole-of-chain reporting is considered.
